Our Mission Statement

The purpose of this fellowship is to provide a community in Chautauqua wherein liberal religious thinking is fostered. Though we may be separated in time and in space, yet shall we be united together in spirit and in purpose.

Our History and Principles
The UU's had a denominational house on the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution from 1904 until the 1960's when it was sold by the UUA in a time of denominational distress. The current Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Chautauqua was formed in 1979 with 25 stalwarts, and has been holding services ever since at the Hall of Philosophy during the summer season. Now with 181 members and more than 500 supportive friends, the fellowship has an average weekly attendance of 165.

As an affiliated congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Association, we covenant to affirm and promote:
  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  • Justice, equality and compassion in human relations;
  • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
  • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
